Soooo we are coming up to the halfway point in January. Are your New Year’s Resolutions still going strong, or have they already faded into a distant memory? Are you ready to celebrate Ditch New Year’s Resolutions Day today?

Why is it so many of us feel compelled to make promises to ourselves we’ll never keep on New Years Eve? Personally I blame the ‘New Year New You’ mantra that seemed to materialise many moons ago. All this feeling that at the start of a brand new year, everything will be OK. Off with the old. On with the new … yada, yada, yada.

Why Do We Fail?

The truth is, for many of us although we have great intentions, we just can’t seem to stick to them. Well, here’s the thing: You don’t really want it.

YES I DO”! I hear you gasp. Well do you? What are the consequences if you fail? Does it really matter to you or will you just ‘try again later or perhaps next year’? When it comes to making lasting change, whether it be to get healthier or to find a new career, it will inevitably be a long process.   There is no fast-track magic super-highway to get you from A to B. Your resolutions, intentions or what-ever other self-empowering word you may pick will all fade faster than the proverbial rainbow unless your head and your heart are working in unison to attain the level of perseverance needed to make those changes. If your head is not wholly committed to the change you seek you will always struggle (and fail) to succeed.

No problem! I just wanted to be clear on that. The good news is that there are some things you can do if you really feel that you need to make a particular change but know that you will struggle (as we all do, let’s be honest).

Here are 3 of my top tips to keep you and those resolutions on track:

  1. Keep Yourself Accountable

Hire a coach, join a club, tell your friends and family about your goals. Use professionals who can give you tools and techniques to help keep you on track. Join a club where you will be with others in the same boat so you can share your experiences and support each other when the going gets tough. Tell your (supportive) nearest and dearest – they will help keep you on track and you are far less likely to quit when others are watching what you are doing.

  1. One Step At A Time

Most people fall into the trap of ‘too much, too soon’. If your resolution is to be healthier, pick one aspect of that that is most important to you. If you want a healthier diet, cut out snacking to start with, or cut our sweet things. Once you have got comfortable with that change, move onto the next thing, whether that be incorporating exercise into your daily routine or giving up alcohol. Start with scheduling a gentle walk of 30 minutes each day, or at least three times a week. Don’t try to make all the changes you want to all at once. You’ll get overwhelmed and will ultimately fail. Slow and steady wins the race when it comes to lasting lifestyle changes.

  1. Don’t Beat Yourself Up

If you fall off the wagon – and you will, don’t beat yourself up. It happens. You are only human. Be kind to yourself and give yourself a break. The important thing is that you get back on track as quickly as possible.

So my final words of wisdom to you all are these: If you really want to succeed in your change goals simply ask yourself how much it really means to you. What are the consequences if this doesn’t happen for you? Are you OK with that? The answers will show you how ready you are (or are not) to make the changes you feel you want.
